The Assertiveness Game

Are you assertive? Can you recognise and cope with assertiveness in others? Here's a chance to find out in a non-threatening environment. Practise the language of assertiveness and learn to recognise when it is appropriate to be assertive.

How it works

This basic introduction to assertiveness, non-assertiveness and aggressive behaviours has been produced as a board game. Participants move across the board and pick up different types of card. True/False cards allow them to decide whether a statement about assertiveness is true or not. What People Say! cards are quotations from work that team members discuss and categorise. And a Group Task card gives the team a task that challenges and develops their ideas about the topic. Their responses are noted on a special handout to be discussed at the Debrief.

What it does

Allows teams – within 60 minutes – to recognise the differences between assertive, non-assertive and aggressive behaviours; to discuss and agree the benefits of assertiveness; to learn the language of assertiveness and to establish an action plan to improve assertive behaviour and self-esteem. A non-threatening way to examine this intriguing topic.

Customer feedback

  • Delegates always comment on its usefulness.

  • Interactive, thought-provoking and fun. One team manager began to realise that her style was quite aggressive and the activity allowed others to say so in a non-confrontational way. We are now using this with all our CL advisors on their 'Have your Say' day.

  • Very good quality and value. It was easy to add on to an already recognised in-house programme. Very interactive, kept them involved and got the message across quickly and they are still talking about the course some days after.
