Appraisal, Coaching & Feedback

Feedback

You're observing a team at work. In three minutes you'll be giving feedback on their performance....Worried? Fearful? After this activity you'll be raring to go with a renewed sense of purpose and confidence.

How it works

The activity has a series of stages. First one team (Team Members), sit round a table and deal with a short 20 minute discussion task. Another team sits outside the first team as Observers and records behaviours and attitudes according to a set of competencies on a Special Form (including skills such as summarising, clarifying, challenging, supporting and so on). Then the observed team reviews its team performance while the observers discuss and agress on what they have seen. Participants then pair up for feedback from Observers to Team Members on a one-to-one basis. The roles are reversed in Part 2 (but with a twist!).

What it does

At the start participants are usually very nervous about the process – by the end they are delighted with their performance, feel they have learned a lot (about themselves and about working in a team and about giving feedback) and they are raring to give feedback to anyone who will listen! Use this activity on any team or communications course to elicit key interpersonal skills and encourage open communication and mutual learning between team members.

Customer feedback

  • Good exercise for raising issues about listening, forming opinions and accepting constructive criticism without becoming defensive - and good for confirming knowledge and understanding.
