ALL members of the team are involved in conversation to answer five questions on the famous statue. ALL members of the team are involved in conversation. Great for listening skills and individual team member assessment.

Your team task is to supply the answers to five, straightforward questions about the statue. As a team member you hold a number of cards containing bits of information about the statue: what it is made of, when it was constructed etc. Some are vital information that help towards answering the questions, others are saying the same thing, in a different way, others are completely irrelevant.

You can share your information verbally with your team but you cannot show or pass on your cards to anyone. Your fellow team members also have cards.

To avoid utter confusion you’ll need to organise the way you go about the task. All the data is there, so you don’t need to be mathematicians, historians or sculptors, but how will you get it in the public domain, sort it out and complete the challenge? Can you finish in time? Can you finish first?

Stresses the need for team organisation, open communication, listening skills and good interpersonal skills. Guaranteed to involve everyone!
  • that every member of the team has a contribution to make
  • better verbal communication and listening skills
  • to share information freely – when appropriate
  • the team is better than the sum of its parts
  1. Introduce the exercise using the PowerPoint presentation.
  2. Divide participants into teams and hand out the Team Briefs and cards. Allow teams 50 minutes to answer the five questions.
  3. Observe teams in action.
  4. Stop the activity after 50 minutes and review what teams have achieved.
  5. Lead a Debrief to draw out the learning points.

Full guidance is provided in the Trainer’s Notes.

F. Flemington, Weightmans Solicitors
An excellent activity. A number of the delegates commented that this was the best team exercise they had taken part in.

Training Manager, NHS Healthcare TrustI wanted all the delegates to be involved and I wanted them to recognise the benefits of sharing information. Colossus did just that!

Alan Shaw, Carshaw Consultants
Just to let you know – Colossus went extremely well. First, we asked teams to list all things good communicators do – the list was comprehensive and thorough. Then we played Colossus and I watched in amazement as teams ignored everything on the list! The debrief was excellent!
