Using a highly participative, self-learning approach this NEW six-unit pack teaches you influencing skills and techniques to improve your performance at work.

To some extent you can pick and mix from the six units in this pack - but right at the start delegates’ influencing skills are put to the test. Working in small teams they prepare and deliver effective presentations in order to try and convince another team of the merits of a holiday that earlier in the activity they rated bottom in a list of holiday destinations. All the necessary information, in the form of holiday brochures, is provided in the pack.  Commenting on each others’ persuasive (or otherwise) presentations provides a great self-learning scenario and a valuable opportunity to practise their innate influencing skills.

Participants then consider some work-based examples where influencing skills are required (participants often identify these as typical of their own experiences). With these they learn to recognise work situations where there’s a need to influence - and consider how best to prepare for each situation, what to say and how to perform.

Next the pack identifies in some detail the six main aspects of influence and in a series of three short videos of ‘influencers’ viewers identify what aspects of influence are used.  They also compare and contrast individual approaches and styles. What influencing techniques are being used, who is the most persuasive?  Why?

Finally, using fresh new scenarios, teams put all their newly acquired skills into practice in short presentations. Points are awarded by the observing teams for persuasiveness, the techniques used, credibility, interaction and overall effectiveness.

  • the key forms of influence
  • to recognise situations where influencing skills are required
  • to make critical observations of ‘influencers’ (on video)
  • to use influencing skills to achieve an objective
  • to help other participants fine-tune their own performance
  1. Briefly introduce the topic and address participants’ existing influencing skills: issue ‘Holiday Cards’ and instruct teams to prepare and deliver short persuasive presentations to the rest of the group. Discuss the influencing skills used (or not used!)
  2. Issue the 1st ‘Handout’ describing five workplace situations where influencing skills are required. Teams review and respond by suggesting appropriate ways to influence.
  3. Next issue the ‘Six Key Aspects of Influence’ which establish the six main types of influence. Teams study the situations described and try to identify the particular influencing skill at play, such as using rapport, credibility, reciprocity, peer pressure etc.
  4. Teams then watch three short videos of presentations and critique the presenters’ performances. How influenced were they; why?
  5. Finally four scenarios allow teams to put all they have learned so far into practice.
  6. What to do and how to debrief each section is fully supported by clear Trainer’s Notes.

I trialled this new pack for Northgate. Participants enjoyed the experience (and so did I) and I have received great feedback following the session with regards to how they are applying their ‘learns’.  They realised the impact that effective influencing can have in their role - they were using only a handful of techniques and are now keen to trial other approaches more appropriate to situations they find themselves in. I would certainly use the pack again – it brings the subject to life in a fun and interactive way.
