A new, enjoyable activity where the differences in leadership style can be compared and evaluated.

To prepare for this activity, each team nominates a leader who receives details of a particular leadership style to adopt. While your leader thinks about his or her style you, and the rest of your team, decide on the qualities of an effective leader.

The nominated leaders study their given style and receive resources and instructions for the task they have to lead their team in - a fairly straightforward, practical one. The leaders then brief their teams in their allocated leadership style.

After the short task is over, teams review what happened. Did they complete the task successfully? How would they rate the leader’s style of leadership? Teams will compare experiences and draw out key points about leadership styles and their relative effectiveness. Full Trainer’s Notes give guidance.
  • leadership can take many forms
  • the main types of leadership
  • different styles suit different situations
  • there are different ways to achieve the same goal
  1. Introduce the activity.
  2. Allow time for teams to choose a leader (or you, the Trainer, select).
  3. Issue team leaders with their individual styles and a Brief for the task. Allow leaders time to familiarise themselves with the style and the task.
  4. The leaders brief their teams.
  5. Observe the teamwork and watch how the different leadership styles impact on team performance.
  6. Lead a Debrief to discuss the learning outcomes and key lessons.
  7. Relate the lessons to the workplace.

Full Trainer’s Notes explain all and give discussion notes.

Steve Laing, QC TrainingGreat exercise; all participants absolutely adored this activity!

R. Street, Independent Consultant
I used Leadership Style with three teams each of five participants and each having a leader with a different style.  The results were slightly unexpected and led to a great debate on the difference between leaders and managers.  Great feedback from participants about the usefulness of the sesson.  At last an activity to show leadership in action!
