How do you deal with disgruntled staff? What if someone isn't following the dress code? Why don't people react reasonably to discipline? Improve the way you address managing people issues with this hands-on, thought-provoking activity.

Faced with a series of ten ‘people’ situations, each with five possible solutions, all you have to do is discuss the issue within your team and make a decision. The decision is entered into a computer for evaluation and a printout gives the ongoing consequences in terms of staff morale, the outlook for the department and a figure for any costs incurred.

At the end of the session, you receive a summary of all your decisions together with a final score. Answers are compared and discussed. There are also two handouts for reference during the Debrief (on employment law and human rights legislation).

Managing People offers supervisors, first-time managers, as well as more senior managers, an opportunity to share ideas in open discussion and reach consensus on people management issues.
  • to establish facts and think before acting
  • to avoid jumping to conclusions, making assumptions, being prejudiced
  • not to act in haste, always allowing time for issues to be fully considered
  • to communicate with staff and keep an ear to the ground (to be aware of potential problems before they arise)
  • to be fair, rational and reasonable in their approach
  • to develop empathy (look at things from another perspective)
  • the importance of knowing current employment law and following correct grievance and disciplinary procedures
  • to reach consensus on team decisions
  1. Introduce the activity using the PowerPoint presentation provided.
  2. Divide the group into teams and issue the Briefing Materials.
  3. Observe the teams and listen to the options they suggest.
  4. At the end of the exercise, print off team reports and begin the Debrief.  Issue further handouts and move on to Action Plans.

Full guidance and answers are provided in the Trainer’s Notes.

Julian Hammond, Gemini TrainingUsed with middle managers (in groups of 8) in a management development training session.  It involved thinking differently about the individual rights of people.  It was thought-provoking and challenged the paradigms of all attendees - a valuable tool to stimulate thinking around how we treat people employed in organisations.

John Hickling, Training & Development Manager, Ibstock Building Products LtdUsed in supervisor training with a group of 13 experienced team leaders as part of their ongoing development.  The best learning points were the impact of poor/good decisions on the bottom line and the importance of discussion/seeking advice in certain situations.

An excellent exercise which generates discussion, competition and participation. Simple to run with good accompanying Trainer's notes. The software is very simple to use and feedback provided to teams is useful.

Mike Tyndall, GA TrainingManaging People is a great exercise. It’s easy to run and provokes much useful discussion towards improving people management.
