Three teams and one overall objective - strong teamwork skills are required  to construct a runway for a ping-pong ball. Euphoria when the ball completes its course - recriminations if it doesn’t! When it comes to it, how well will teams cooperate?

Great fun, with serious learning points clearly demonstrated. An ideal way to start a course - or to end on a high.

Before the ‘rollaball’ construction can begin you earn the building resources by answering a series of questions. Then according to certain constraints you build your own segment of the runway. Clear communications with other teams ensures interfaces are built to the same specification of height and width!

Finally you join forces with the other two teams and assemble the whole runway. Putting it to the test with the ping pong ball reveals all. A great way to review teamwork skills and the way we work with other teams. Lots of points emerge that can easily be implemented back at work.
  • to work as an effective team
  • to collaborate rather than compete
  • to work and cooperate with other teams
  1. Introduce the activity.
  2. Divide the group into three teams.
  3. Set up a neutral area for inter-team meetings.
  4. Issue Briefing Sheets and construction materials (when earned).
  5. Observe the teams for 60 minutes or more.
  6. Bring teams together and test the completed structure.
  7. Issue review forms and conduct a Debrief, rounding off with Action Plans for performance improvement.

Jane Caven, SageGreen Limited
Used at a conference for Chartered Accountants and the best learning points include the need for planning, effective communication and COLLABORATION, not competition.

Rollaball! is one of the most effective team work tools I have used.  It is great fun for participants and builds an excellent team spirit on which further training may be based.  I really enjoyed using it and achieved outstanding results.

Keith Watkins, Royal Wolverhampton Hospital
I used Rollaball for Teamwork Training with 12 first-time managers.  The best learning points were the need to be less competitive and negotiate more openly!

Excellent!  A fantastic way to finish a 6-day programme – the delegates left on a real high.  More games like this please.

Fiona Flemington, Weightmans Solicitors
The best learning point is that communication is key when trying to achieve the overall objective.

I have used this activity a number of times and it always gets the message across – teamwork is vital to achieve the best results.  Brilliant activity – would recommend to anyone who is experiencing difficulties with their team.

D. Willis, DW SolutionsExcellent activity. Fun, plenty of learning and so easy to run.

Sarah Cook, The Stairway Consultancy
Rollaball! Is a well-designed and ready-to-use, cross-functional team activity that generates many learning points. A very useful activity.

P Timms, Dept of Constitutional Affairs
Really helps give so many of our first time managers food for thought on teamwork and project management.
