Four teams cooperate to achieve a win/win outcome. If they try to compete all is lost! A great lesson for teamwork and problem solving in different departments.

Your team brief alerts you to an audacious London robbery. You are one of four police divisions out to catch the villains. Your problem is budget. Gathering information from witnesses and the occasional informer costs money. A raid on a building costs much more.

By carful teamwork and sharing the load you have a chance of solving this crime. You won’t take all the glory but you won’t take any if you can’t work together! Teams can achieve together what no team can achieve alone. And any one team who thinks differently can expect a rough ride from the others! Ideal to show how separate departments need to work together for successful problem solving.
  • the benefits of team cooperation
  • ways to approach problems
  • the need to manage information, piece it together and share it freely
  • the importance of honesty and trust when negotiating
  • the need for tight budget control
  • the sum of the parts is greater than the whole
  1. Divide participants into teams.
  2. Introduce the activity and issue the Team Briefs and maps.
  3. Display three posters that give the names of informers, criminals and members of the general public who teams can contact.
  4. Issue information when teams request it on Data Request Forms.
  5. Observe the teams in action and arrange meetings between teams when required.
  6. Lead a Debrief on how the teams worked and how well they cooperated in solving the case.

G Hannah, NHS Lanarkshire Monklands HospitalI used The Bank Job on a basic supervisory management course – working with teams exercise. The best learning points included communication and working together. It was fun, interesting & useful.
T Denton, Coors Brewers
We use it primarily to foster better understanding within and between teams (across many functions, including Sales, Finance, Technical Services, IS). I have also used it at a quarterly teambuilding event. It highlights the need to cooperate rather than compete. We have a sales-oriented and very competitive culture, and often this can get in the way of getting the job done.

Simple to set up, simple to facilitate, but powerful for learning. The “realism” of the exercise helps to bring it to life.

P Gorley, CompuserveA great success. Over 10 sessions it never failed to intrigue and frustrate - and I now know Soho and the West End much better!
M Riley, Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust
Enjoyed by all, energising and good fun - and not as simplistic as it might seem.

S. Dandikar, Blaby District Council
Excellent team working exercise that gets any group thinking and working together - while having fun. Had lots of positive comment from the attendees.
M Jorgensen, Quidditas TrainingAn ideal exercise for problem solving, negotiation and communication skills. Participants really get involved.
