Illustrates a whole range of teamwork skills against a deadline of just 30 minutes! The outcome provides an immediate measure of team performance.

A fast-paced, organisational task - seemingly straightforward but full of pitfalls for the unwary! You’re preparing pay packets for 12 casual workers. Each team member holds different information on the work dockets. Share this verbally (not by showing) with the whole team to establish who is owed what. Teamwork accuracy under a deadline is paramount (don’t for example confuse workers Tammy Marters and Tommy Masters).

Remember there’s tax to deduct but what is the most efficient stage to do it? Giving the correct pay is vital, naturally! But what coinage do you have? It must serve all pay packs (so don’t use all the $20 notes making up one pack). The knack is to work down from the highest denomination. Obvious when you think about it - but there’s so much to think about. Finally, remember to label the packets before the deadline is up!

How will you know if they get it right? Easy - there should be just two particular coins left over.

Briefs are on the CD-Rom for easy reprinting.
  • the importance of accuracy and attention to detail
  • to get organised as a team and to allocate roles
  • to work to a tight deadline
  • to share information with others in a helpful way
  • to show the need for objectives to be clear and for a method of working to be agreed on right at the start
  1. Divide participants into teams and explain the nature of the task.
  2. Issue Briefing Materials and resources to each person.
  3. Write the current time on the flipchart or whiteboard and tell the teams to start.
  4. Observe the teams at work.
  5. Stop the activity after exactly 30 minutes and check who has completed the task successfully.
  6. Lead a Debrief on the learning points.

Full guidance is provided in the Trainer’s Notes.
Gill Hannah, Training Officer, Corporate Services, NHS LanarkshireUsed on a full day team-building event with a group of approximately 25 multi-disciplinary health professionals. The activity showed the group how some staff “jumped” in and others thought things through. Also how the group didn’t recognise individuality, strengths and they weren’t as good as they thought at communication.

Fun, educational, gave food for thought for individuals. A thoroughly enjoyable, short exercise to reinforce the messages around communication, planning and playing to people’s strengths.

J Shilcott, Plymout City Council Tamar EBPThe group was totally engrossed right from the start.

We have quite a number of Northgate Activities - they work really well not only from the students' point of view but from mine as facilitator.

Edwards Gallier, Training & Development Manager (UK), Jurys Doyle Hotel GroupWe used Deadline 30 Minutes as an icebreaker at the start of a Personnel Development Planning Session with managers in all areas of the business in mixed groups. The best learning points were: not giving up; time management; sharing job roles and responsibilities; planning; breaking a large job into small pieces; motivation.

Short, sharp, not as easy as it looks - a great leveller!

Helen Anderson, Regional Audit Manager, GMAC Commercial Finance PlcUsed at a conference on Teamwork Training with the Audit team. The best learning points were: segregation of duties to complete the tasks, communication/sharing info and problem-solving.

This activity focuses the mind, whilst keeping attention to detail and having fun. All the team enjoyed the game.
